I am writing this review out of sheer disgust for this church. My children attended Sunday school at Oak Park Church of God during a visit to Salem for a family reunion on Sunday, March 22 2015. The lesson was about Jesus in the days prior to the crucifixion in the olive garden with his disciples. The teacher asked for six volunteers from the class of preschool through fifth graders who would like to do "a banana eating contest" the moral of which would be explained later. My ten year old daughter volunteered as she loves to participate in almost any activity. The volunteers lined up in front of a table with bowls in front of each of them and were instructed to "eat the bananas as quickly as possible". The teachers told them mockingly that they were "eating too politely" when the children failed to consume the bananas as quickly as expected. Immediately following the bananas they were each given a large cup full of soda and told "chug it as quickly as they could", leading the children to believe that they were racing each other. As soon as the children finished, they were told that "it was supposed to make you puke", which was the reason for the bowls. When the children failed to vomit they were told to go sit down and were asked what they felt like. When I asked my children what the lesson was intending to teach, they said that they were unsure and vaguely said something about trying to get the "badness out of them".
I am shocked and sickened by this disgusting "lesson" which has little to do with a bible story and most certainly implies that bulimia is a godly way of life. My husband and I will be emailing the church today to inform them and to demand an explanation, however, I feel the need to inform others about this situation and lack of oversight that allowed a lesson such as this to be taught.
I will update this review with with the response we receive from the church.Added October 20, 2016 by Becky McNeil
